Basic information

Blueberries may be small, but they are a true food treasure. This superfood, with its delicate dark blue skin and a delightful sweet-tart flavor, is among the most nutritious foods available. Its scientific name is Vaccinium corymbosum, and it is a member of the berry family.

Also known as the blueberry, it has become a standout product, earning recognition both nationally and internationally for its versatility in cooking and its many health benefits.

Peru is the world’s top exporter of blueberries. In 2023, fresh blueberry exports totaled USD 1,676 million, according to PROMPERÚ. This superfood is cultivated in the regions of Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash, and Ica. It is exported to countries including the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and China.

Peru has a unique advantage: it can produce blueberries nearly year-round due to its favorable climate, enabling it to supply markets when other countries cannot.

Blueberries are an incredibly versatile fruit. At home, you can enjoy them in juices, smoothies, pancakes, and pastries. Add them to cereals, yogurts, or smoothies for a healthy breakfast. They are also fantastic in salads and sauces, and dried blueberries make a perfect on-the-go snack.

Human health benefits

According to the American Heart Association's Heart-Check program, blueberries are a highly nutritious food that offers significant health benefits. They are rich in fiber, which supports heart health and helps control cholesterol levels; vitamin C, which is essential for a strong immune system; vitamin K, which is important for the circulatory system; and manganese, which helps convert proteins, carbohydrates, and fats into energy.

These fruits are low in calories and fat, making them an excellent choice for a healthy diet. Their popularity in the international market stems from their antioxidant properties, which help reduce cell damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress, preventing skin blemishes and premature aging.
