Basic information

Lucuma is a culinary treasure deeply rooted in Peru's history and is now recognized as one of the most sought-after superfoods worldwide. Its cultivation and use date back to pre-Hispanic times, as shown by its depictions on ceramics from the Mochica culture along the northern coast. These ancient vessels, both utilitarian and ceremonial, highlight lucuma as a staple in the diet of early Peruvians.

Lucuma production is primarily concentrated in the departments of Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Ancash, Moquegua, and Lima. This superfood thrives at altitudes ranging from sea level up to 3,000 meters.

Lucuma's versatility in the kitchen has fueled its industrialization, especially as it is often turned into flour to create a wide variety of desserts and ice creams, such as mousses, cheesecakes, artisanal ice creams, and creams. Its unique, sweet flavor enhances these treats, making them popular both in Peru and international markets.

Peru exports lucuma to several international markets, including Chile, the United States, Spain, and the Russian Federation, among others.
